UN must prevent terrorism sponsors

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon's statement

Your Majesties, Prime Minister, Distinguished Heads of State and Government, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Why have you invited me to speak here? Because terrorism is a threat to all states, to all peoples, which can strike anytime, anywhere.

It is a direct attack on the core values the United Nations stands for: the rule of law; the protection of civilians; mutual respect between people of different faiths and cultures; and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Foreign backed terrorism: UN must prevent

Nov 12, 2013, Press TV

UN must prevent terrorism sponsors in Syria: Stone

Ken Stone, with the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War, from Ontario, has joined Press TV’s Top Five program to further discuss the upcoming Geneva II Conference and the future of Syria’s war on foreign-sponsored terror.

What follows is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mr. Stone this is not the first time that UN is appealing for funding and assistance and aid for the Syrian people but it seems that there is no lack of funds when it comes to supporting insurgents who are fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad but these funds seem to disappear when it comes to the Syrian population. What do you make of that?

Stone: I agree with you 100%. The problem with Mr. Ban Ki-moon is that he cannot see the forest for the trees.

There was no refugee problem in Syria three years ago before the foreign-backed mercenary war was unleashed on that sovereign country by some Western and Arab countries.

There were no four million internally displaced people inside of Syria before their mercenary intervention began. What Mr. Ban Ki-moon has to do as the United Nations chief executive officer is to enforce the charter of the United Nations.

He has to approach those countries that are waging an illegal, covert military aggression against Syria; the countries are 11 core countries of the so-called Friends of Syria group.

He has to approach them and say you must cease and desist from your covert military action; you are violating the UN charter, you are violating the international law.

And then he has to turn as well to the 40 periphery countries in the Friends of Syria group and say to them, you have created illegal regimes of economic sanctions against Syria and these sanctions have not been approved by the United Nations Security Council, they are illegal and you must dismantle these regimes (of illegal sanctions).

Press TV: Well, Mr. Stone it was hoped that some of these things might be achieved in that Geneva II Conference on which many expectations were depending, however that conference seems like a thing of the past, now very unlikely to take place as many are pointing out, due to the stance of the so-called SNC (Syrian National Coalition).

So what about the people of Syria? What is going to happen considering it is just the arms that are finding their way into Syrian territory and in the hands of the foreign-backed insurgents but no food, no aid, no medicine is getting there.

Stone: Mr. Ban needs to prod both countries that are holding up Geneva II Conference by trying to set preconditions for the talks. The Geneva communiqué of 2012 made it very clear, very simple, a ceasefire and negotiations without preconditions but the countries that sponsor the mercenaries, certain countries in the West, including Canada unfortunately, are trying to set preconditions saying that Mr. Assad would have to go first.

Well, Mr. Ban has to approach these countries who are dragging their feet and allowing the mercenaries whom they support, to stop throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

They have to get down to their business and come to the Geneva II with all the countries in the region who are involved and settle the issue in a political rather than a military way.

UN report will accuse Syria of crimes against humanity

Between 1961 and 1971 about 77 million litres of Agent Orange were sprayed over approximately 2.9 million hectares in Vietnam, much of it farmland. During what the Vietnamese called the American War signs of the effects of this spraying began to emerge among soldiers and civilians. The Vietnamese have long claimed that Agent Orange has seriously damaged the health of those who lived in the areas where it was used. Despite United States assertions that no proof exists to support this claim, that country’s own veterans of the war in Vietnam who came into contact with Agent Orange are able to claim compensation for a range of medical conditions acknowledged to be associated with dioxin.

Although the defoliation program ended in 1971, for many years high levels of dioxin remained in the soil over which Agent Orange was sprayed. Vietnamese studies have shown a higher level of deformity and illness, including mental retardation, among children born in areas that were subject to spraying than those born in other areas of the country.

While children born in the 1990s continued to exhibit illness and deformities associated with Agent Orange, Vietnam’s monsoon climate means that over time much of the dioxin that was sprayed over the country has washed into the sea. For Vietnamese civilians, however, even more than three decades after the war ended, the effects of Agent Orange linger.

Syria: UN media war chemical weapons

Lavrov.jpg

Aug 23, 2013

Moscow, (SANA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his U.S. counterpart John Kerry stressed the importance of conducting an objective investigation into reports on possible use of chemical weapons in Damascus Countryside in Syria two days ago.

A statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov made phone calls with Kerry, highlighting the need that the armed opposition's groups ensure a safe entry for the UN investigators to the region where reports said the possible chemical attack took place.

The statement pointed out that Russia has called upon Syria to cooperate with the UN experts.

It added that Moscow expects the "Syrian opposition" to make constructive steps towards getting the international conference on Syria held so as to find a solution to the crisis as soon as possible.

Russia: Syrian 'opposition' hinders chemical weapons use investigation

The Syrian opposition hinders conducting an objective investigation into an allege use of chemical weapons in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement on Friday that Moscow got no signal that the Syrian opposition is ready to ensure the safety of the international experts in Syria.

Lukashevich urged all influential sides to take the necessary measures to see to that the UN experts' missions are carried out.

Moscow is in constant communication with the Syrian leadership and encourages constructive cooperation with the UN investigators, the Russian diplomat said, indicating that Moscow ''views with appreciation'' Damascus' approval to the visit of the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs which it sees ''very important.''

In the same context, Lukashevich described as ''unacceptable'' the calls to pressure the UN Security Council into passing a resolution that authorizes the use of force against Syria.

''It is strange that these statements come from those who obstructed last March the Syrian government's call for a prompt and impartial investigation into the Syrian opposition's use of chemical weapons in Khan al-Assal residential area,'' he added.

Syria has demanded that the UN conducts an objective probe into a chemical weapons use by the armed terrorist groups against civilians in Khan al-Assal area last March, but London and Paris had brought pressure to bear on the UN Secretary-General in a bid to obstruct the investigation.

The US: We are unable to conclusively determine chemical weapons use

Earlier, the US announced that it is unable to confirm reports that spoke of an alleged gas attack in Damascus Countryside last Wednesday.

"At this time we are unable to conclusively determine chemical weapon use," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters Thursday afternoon.

"We are focused on doing everything possible within our power to nail down the facts," she added.

The General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces earlier stressed in a statement that there was no truth whatsoever to the false allegations made by the tendentious media channels on the Syrian army's use of chemical weapons in areas in Damascus Countryside.

The Command affirmed that such allegations are part of the dirty media war led by some countries against Syria.

UN: Alleged Syria chemical attacks 'serious escalation'

obamaban.jpg

BBC News - 22 August 2013

UN officials say alleged chemical weapons attacks which Syria's opposition says killed hundreds near Damascus were a "serious escalation".

Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson made the comments after briefing an emergency UN Security Council meeting about Wednesday's incident.

The Security Council also said that clarity was needed over the attacks.

Some 35 member states called for UN weapons inspectors already in Syria to be dispatched immediately to the scene.

Opposition activists said that more than 1,000 people were killed after government forces launched rockets with toxic agents into the Damascus suburbs in the Ghouta region early on Wednesday.

The Syrian government has denied the allegations, describing them as "illogical and fabricated". The Syrian army said the opposition made up the claims to divert attention from the huge losses its forces had suffered recently.

The BBC has been unable to independently confirm the death toll.
