As a reminder:

UNITED NATIONS, August 28, 2013 (Itar-Tass) – The Russian and Chinese officials walked out of the U.N. Security Council meeting in New York on Wednesday, August 28, after U.S. Permanent Representative Samantha Power had called for an immediate action in Syria.

The permanent members of the U.N. Security Council – Russia, Britain, China, the U.S. and France – had been invited to the closed meeting. An hour later the Russian and Chinese diplomats left the meeting and headed to the Security Council’s main conference room where debates on Haiti was taking place.

Western countries may, until the end of the day, submit to the Security Council a draft resolution that will give the green light to an armed operation in Syria. Russia and China, which have the right of veto in the Security Council, have spoken up strongly against the use of force.

However Western countries have made it clear that they might take measures without waiting for the U.N. Security Council’s decision as they did in 1999 in Kosovo. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said this would be a gross violation of international law.

’2013 will be remembered as the year in which the world bid a sad but celebratory farewell to Nelson Mandela… I can think of nothing I would rather see in 2014 than for world leaders to emulate his example in upholding their moral and political responsibilities.’ (UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on the UN-website where you’ll find no mention of the 5.000 Syrians  which were just evacuated)

Foreign Ministry: Syria calls on UNSC to condemn terrorist acts

Dec 2, 2013

Damascus, (SANA) – Foreign and Expatriates Ministry sent on Monday two identical letters to the chairman of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General on the attack launched early this morning by the armed terrorist groups on Maloula town in Damascus countryside and sabotage of churches and houses.

In the letters, the Ministry said, "In Several letters sent already, we stressed that the Syrian Arab Republic is facing a barbarian war launched by extremist takfiri gangs targeting its present and future."

The Ministry added that the terrorist takfiri groups attacked Monday morning the ancient town of Maloula in Damascus countryside which is the only town in the world where the habitants are still speaking the language of Jesus Christ and they sabotaged the churches and houses of the civilians and broke into St. Thecla Convent and held Mother Superior Pelagia Sayyaf and a number of nuns hostage.

The Ministry said, "Another proof of the armed terrorist groups' scorn of religious symbols of various religions and denominations is the terrorists' mortar attack on the Great Umayyad Mosque on 30/11/2013 in Damascus which caused the martyrdom of 4 citizens, including a child and a woman, and the injury of 26 others. The terrorists also destroyed recently several religious shrines in Aleppo city.'

"Given these facts, we call on the Security Council to condemn these terrorist acts in the strongest terms, and we call on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and exert pressure on the countries which are supporting these groups to stop providing them with logistical and financial support," the Ministry added.
