Latest News Syria: food packages for Palestinians

Palestinian official: Up to 5,000 food packages entered al-Yarmouk camp

Damascus, Feb 5, 2014 (SANA) _More than 5, 000 food packages have been distributed in al-Yarmouk Refugee Camp as part of an ongoing operation that has been on for the 7th consecutive day, Ambassador Anwar Abdul-Hadi, Director of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Liberation Organization said.

An average of 800-1,000 food packages enters the camp daily.

The ambassador told SANA that about 2, 800 humanitarian cases, including patients and university students, have been evacuated from the camp, with the critical cases sent to Syrian hospitals and some to makeshift residential centers.

He indicated that the delivery of foodstuffs to the camp's residents will continue despite hindrances.

Abdul-Hadi held the gunmen responsible for starving the camp's residents and aborting earlier initiatives to get aid convoys inside the camp, blaming them for ''embroiling the Palestinian refugee camps in the Syrian crisis that the organization has repeatedly declared non-interference in.''

The ambassador stressed support to Syria in case of an aggression, hailing its hosting the Palestinian refugees who have always felt at home, despite their commitment to their right to return.

Abdul-Hadi affirmed that the breakthrough in delivering humanitarian aid was not possible had it not been for the support of the Syrian government that offered all necessary facilitations.

He urged the countries backing terrorists to put pressure on gunmen to evacuate the camp.

Geneva 2 Syria: blocked by the U.S. and its allies

Coalition delegation of so-called "opposition" rejects a political communiqué containing principles submitted by official Syrian delegaiton

Geneva, Jan 27, 2014 (SANA delegate) – The Syrian Arab Republic's official delegation to the Geneva 2 Conference presented a "basic elements of a political communiqué" containing principles which the coalition delegation of the so-called "opposition" rejected.

The communiqué affirms respecting Syria's sovereignty, restoring its usurped lands, preserving its establishments, and abandoning all forms of extremism, fanaticism and takfiri ideas.

The communiqué rejects all forms of interference or foreign dictation, with the Syrians deciding upon their country's future using democratic methods, in addition to asserting that that it's not permissible to relinquish any part of Syria.

The communiqué stresses that the Syrian Arab Republic is a democratic country based on the basis of political pluralism, the rule of law, independence of the judiciary and citizenship, and protecting national unity and cultural diversity of the components of the Syrian society and protecting public freedom, and the Syrians are the ones who have have the right to choose their political system withoutout compromising on any subject unacceptable to the syrian people from any imposed formulae.

The communiqué asks all countries to prevent supplying weapons or training or harboring terrorists, and also stopping all kinds of media hatred incitment to perpetrate terrorist acts in accordance with international resolutions relevant to combating terrorism.

The communiqué also noted that the state establishment cost people money and hard work and therefore must be preserved, in addition to stressing the need to preserve and protect all state establishments and utilities, infrastructure, and public and private properties.

Sources close to the Syrian official delegation to Geneva asserted that the delegation was and still is open to discussing all points, but it proposed these principles which no patriotic Syrian would reject in order to find common ground, yet the coalition delegation of the so-called "opposition" rejected them.

Graduating as the top student in Homs and receiving the fourth highest score in Syria for the secondary school exam in 1971, she met the new leader of Syria, Hafez Assad, who awarded her a scholarship to complete a university degree. In 1977, she earned an MA degree from Warwick University, where she also finished her PhD degreee. Her PhD dissertation was on the English poet Shelley, who is well-known for his revolutionary political and poetic visions as in his poem 'Revolt of Islam,' about someone who has 'a resolution to confer the boons of political and intellectual freedom on his fellow-creatures'.

Demonstrating a great deal of fearlesness and independence, she maried, against the will of her family, an Iraqi national whom she met during her doctoral study in Britain.

After graduation, Shabaan taught for two years (1982-1984) in Algeria, before going back to Damascus to start a career as a professor in comparative women's literature and a writer exposing and agitating against the hindrances of women.

Shabaan's high achievements in school and her membership in the Ba'ath party from an early age attracted the attention of President Hafes Assads, who invited her to do a simultaneous translation for his meeting with former US Secretary of State, Warren Minor Christopher.
