Syrian presidency: Freedom-fighter Mandela offered an inspiration for posterity

December 6, 2013

Damascus, (SANA) - The Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic issued a statement on Friday in tribute to Nelson Mandela, South Africa's former president and anti-apartheid icon who died yesterday at the age of 95 at his home in Johannesburg.

''With Mandela's passing away, the world has lost a trailblazing freedom fighter who fought for freedom, justice and equality and inspired the values of amity and human fraternity,'' the statement said.

Mandela will remain an inspiration for generations to come and "mothers with continue to give birth to persevering freedom fighters,'' the statement pointed out.

The statement indicated that ''Mandela did symbolize a whole freedom movement that generations, peoples and countries have long drawn lessons from, and instilled the conviction that rights never die as long as people continue to lay claim to."

Elaborating on the traits of the deceased icon, the statement described Mandela as a ''symbol of resistance and opposing racism, occupation and oppression. ''

Mandela has passed the torch of resistance and liberation, the statement said, ''in the hopes that aggressors will eventually learn the lesson that they will lose at the end of the day no matter how mighty and powerful they are, and no matter how much havoc they wreak in the world.''

''Throughout his life and after his death, Nelson Mandela will remain an example to follow for those who champion the just causes of peoples, for the people of South Africa and all freedom fighters around the world," the statement concluded.

South African President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela, "the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed," adding that he "passed on peacefully."

"Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father," Zuma said.

"Our thoughts are with the millions of people who embraced Mandela as their own and who saw his cause as their cause.… This is the moment of our deepest sorrow.”

"The time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices - submit or fight. That time has now come to South Africa. We shall not submit and we have no choice but to hit back by all means in our power in defence of our people, our future, and our freedom."
