Brussels, December 7, 2012

'EU aid chief sounds alarm on Syria after 1,000 days of conflict'

Syria is facing "the most disastrous humanitarian crisis in decades," a senior European Union official warned Sunday, marking 1,000 days since the armed conflict began.

"One thousand days of violence which has resulted in tens of thousands of men, women and children losing their lives, millions being displaced in the country and beyond its borders in search of safety," EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said.

"One thousand days of death, fear, hardship, deprivation and despair. One thousand days in which we are witnessing the creation of a lost generation," she said.

Syria's conflict of nearly three years has left more than 100,000 dead and forced more than 3 million refugees to flee the country, according to United Nations estimates.

Long-awaited peace talks between the Damascus government and the Syrian opposition are expected to be held in Geneva on Jan. 22.

Georgieva said her hopes are "pinned" on the conference.

"In the meantime, I continue to reiterate my plea, and that of the entire international humanitarian community, for the parties involved in this terrible conflict to facilitate humanitarian access to all those in need," she said.

Syria: Turkish authorities continue to facilitate flow of terrorists and arms to Syria

December 6, 2013

Damascus, (SANA)

Foreign and Expatriates Ministry denounced as 'reprehensible' the ongoing Turkish authorities' involvement in supporting the armed terrorist groups in Syria.

In two identical letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and President of the United Nations Security Council, the ministry said the Turkish government continues, according to confirmed and documented reports, to offer training and logistical support to the armed terrorist groups.

The Turkish authorities are still providing terrorists with safe havens and facilitating the flow of terrorists and arms into Syria which, the letters said ''constitutes a flagrant violation of the international legitimacy resolutions, including the UNSC resolution No. 1373.''

The ministry cited several border crossings that the Turkish authorities are facilitating the passage of terrorists and arms through, including Bab al-Hawa, al-Fawz, Ein al-Bayda, Kherbet al-Jouz, al-Rihanieh, Ghazaleh, Tal al-Dahab and Atma.

The ministry said that the terrorist attacks stopped at nothing, targeting hospitals, educational institutions, worshiping places and diplomatic missions' headquarters, not sparing even children in their schools and school buses.

The Foreign Ministry urged the international community to assume its responsibilities and undertake prompt measures according to the powers vested in it to combat terrorism targeting the Syrian people and state.

Latest News Syria: Greek Orthodox Church

December 5, 2013

Beirut, (SANA) - Patriarch John X Yazigi of Antioch and All the East for Greek Orthodox Church reiterated his plea for replacing "the logic of conflict" in Syria with dialogue.

During a press conference in Beirut on Thursday, Patriarch Yazigi urged the international community to step in and exert efforts to release the nuns kidnapped from St. Thecla convent.

''We received with overwhelming pain the news about the abduction of the nuns…Since our early attempts to set them free have yielded no results, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East appeals to the international community to intervene and exert efforts to return them safe and sound,'' the Patriarch said.

''Let it be known to everyone: each single drop of an innocent victim's blood out-values all the mottos of the world, '' he said.

An armed terrorist group attacked last Monday St. Thecla convent in Maaloula city and held Mother Superior Pelagia Sayyaf and a number of nuns hostage, in addition to committing acts of murder and sabotage in the town.

BULLETIN - SEPTEMBER 23, 2011

SYRIA’S ‘VERY, VERY UGLY’ RELATIONS WITH TURKEY

Following his September 21 meeting with President Obama, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the press that Turkey and the U.S. would work together to decide on what sanctions Turkey should impose against Syria. Erdogan described his relationship with Obama as his “pride and joy” and Turkey’s relationship with Syria as “very, very ugly.”

New Turkish sanctions would add incremental economic pressure on Syria at a time when Syrian petroleum exports and imports have come to a virtual standstill. In the past few weeks, Syria’s government-run oil trading firm, Sytrol, has had no takers for cargoes of crude oil, naphtha, and vacuum gas oil that it has tendered for sale. Neither has it found anyone willing to sell it the diesel it needs. The few traders willing to look into deals with Sytrol say they can’t find a vessel willing to go to Syrian ports or a bank to handle the payments.

The EU sanctions on the import of Syrian crude exempt contracts signed before September 2 and permit imports into the EU until November 15. Earlier this week, Sytrol posted its official selling price for its heavy crude for October delivery unchanged from September levels, suggesting it hasn’t secured government approval to offer steep discounts.

Two weeks ago, Chinese trading company Unipec was reportedly interested in buying Syrian vacuum gas oil, although it has not seriously pursued any new purchases yet.

'EU warns about threat of foreign fighters in Syria'

December 4, 2013

BRUSSELS — The European Union's anti-terror chief will tell EU interior ministers on Thursday about the "major security threat" that the increase of foreign fighters in Syria poses.

A note for the meeting from the office of EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove stresses that numbers of fighters traveling back and forth from Syria is increasing.

The note, obtained by The Associated Press, specifically calls for better use of airline passenger information available to security officials to keep track of when and how rebels move to Syria.

Such legislation remains stuck in the European Parliament, and could remain there for months to come, considering the furor over the revelations from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden about wholesale data-mining of EU citizens.

The note does not name the number of fighters traveling from the 28-member EU to Syria.

But the 11 western European countries with the biggest contingents in Syria are estimated to have some 1,200-1,700 people among rebel forces, according to government and analyst figures compiled by the AP for a story published Tuesday. That compares to estimates of 600-800 from those countries in late spring.

Belgian Interior Minister Joelle Milquet organized an international gathering on the subject with a dozen counterparts on the eve of the EU meeting.

"We have to anticipate the returns (of fighters from Syria), the ways to handle this, the prevention measures and especially the exchange of information on the travels," she said.

Last month, the head of Britain's domestic spying agency said the intelligence service had seen "low hundreds of people" from Britain go to Syria and that some have since returned — stoking fears extremists could pose a domestic threat.

Some of them, said Britain's counter-terror chief Helen Ball on Wednesday, "decided to get themselves trained to use weapons or build bombs and engage in fighting".

"They are not some romantic freedom fighters," Ball said.

EU interior ministers will also be looking at ways to cooperate more closely with Syria's neighbor Turkey, through which most of the fighters move to get to the Syrian rebel camps.

"The EU should offer to assist Turkey in improving controls at borders and airports and should do more to help in preventing radicalization of individuals, especially in refugee camps," the note said.

A senior EU official, who demanded anonymity because of a sensitivity of the issue, said that beyond the fighters from the 28-nation EU, there were also some 500 from Balkan nations, highlighting the contribution from small nations like Bosnia and Kosovo.

"Kosovo has 80 to 100 for 2 million people," he said.

The official said the total number of EU fighters could be well above 1,000, bringing it roughly in line with the AP assessment.

The EU-based rebels are drawn by recruiters arranging travel and comfortable lodging. They instill militant Islam that EU security officials see as a potent threat once the fighters return home.

"There are cases where individuals continue traveling back and forth," the note for the ministers said. Rebels are often seen as heroes to a small section of youths upon return, making them ideal to further foster recruitment.

Russia delivers new shipment of humanitarian aid to Syria

Russia delivers new shipment of humanitarian aid to Syria

December 4, 2013

An Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft belonging to the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry has delivered 25 tonnes of food to Latakia for Syrian civilians suffering from the internal armed conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "Another Russian humanitarian operation has been carried out with relevant security measures provided by the Syrian authorities," it said...

"Russia will continue providing the necessary humanitarian aid to the friendly Syrian people both through special international organizations and in a bilateral format and will also provide assistance to Russian citizens permanently living in Syria and wishing to temporarily leave the country for security reasons," the statement reads.

Russia delivers humanitarian cargo to Syria's Latakia

Russia delivered another humanitarian consignment to Syria's Latakia on Tuesday, head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's international activity department Alexander Tomashov said.

An Il-76 cargo plane with 25 tonnes of food onboard landed at Bassel al-Assad International Airport, where the Russian Emergencies Ministry's team was met by Latakia governor Ahmed Sheikh Abdul Qadir.

"This humanitarian cargo from Russia proves once again that Syria is not alone in its war on terror," the governor said. "With the support of its friends the Syrian people will be able to win this battle."

In 2013, the Russian Emergencies Ministry sent over 200 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Syria and neighboring Lebanon and Jordan. Another 70 tonnes were intended for Palestinian refugees in Syria. The humanitarian consignment consisted of tents, electric generators, dishware, camp furniture, blankets, food and baby food.

The ministry's planes brought around 900 citizens of Russia and the CIS back to their homeland.
