West secretly backing al-Qaeda in Syria

West secretly backing al-Qaeda in Syria: Lawyer

An international lawyer says the West is secretly and indirectly supporting al-Qaeda-linked militants in the fight against the Syrian government, Press TV reports.

Pointing to a recent report by French newspaper Le Figaro that after Saudi Arabia, the US was second in line to lead al-Qaeda forces fighting against the Syrian government, Franklin Lamb said on Wednesday that the revelation was “credible.”

“I think that even if we accept that Turkey and Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and I think we must, are overtly supporting al-Qaeda and the terrorist groups, I think the West is doing it indirectly maybe sub-rosa, maybe not totally comfortable with it,” he said.

He added that al-Qaeda had an “enormous fire power” and encouragement to expand fighting against the Syrian government due to the “funding from the West and the [Persian] Gulf” countries.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the US and Saudi Arabia, along with their Western and regional allies, are supporting the Takfiri groups operating inside the country.

Around 10,000 of the militants, with many being foreign nationals, are fighting for groups affiliated with al-Qaeda such as the al-Nusra Front and the rest fight for different militant groups.

Latest News Syria: Australian solidarity delegation

President al-Assad: Takfiri extremist mentality is terrorism that knows no borders, has no home

Damascus, Dec 23, 2013 (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Monday received an Australian solidarity delegation comprising academic figures and activists, headed by Prof. Tim Anderson.

During the meeting, President al-Assad said that what is happening in Syria and the region affects the entire world, because the takfiri extremist mentality Syria is facing is a terrorism that knows no borders and has no home, asserting that it's an international blight that could strike anywhere and at any time.

On relations with the West, President al-Assad said that the problem lies in the double standards employed by some western politicians regarding regional issues and their pursuit of narrow interests in a manner removed from a correct understanding of the reality and nature of what is happening in Syria and the region.

The President underlined the importance of visits like this in deepening communication and building cultural bridges among people in order to relay reality as it is and confront attempts of media falsification and misdirection.

For their part, members of the delegation said they will do their best to relay the truth about what they witnessed in Syria, noting that they represent a broad section of the Australian people who support Syria against the multifaceted war targeting it which aims to deplete its people's resources and undermine its integral role in the region.

Man of the Year: Edward Snowden

Recapping 2013: Snowden, part 1

December 23, 2013

It’s that time of the year – the time to draw conclusions, and make forecasts – and you know, just remember notable things that happened this year. And with regards to the internet, one of the most notable events of the year is the NSA spying scandal. And of course, for this, we have Edward Snowden to thank.

Now, if you’re not familiar with the story of Edward Snowden, you haven’t been keeping tabs on what’s going on around the world. A quick recap – former NSA contractor comes into possession of some highly classified information regarding what the NSA is doing, and decides to make this information public. Interesting note – he used quite a bit of social engineering to do it. In other words, he didn’t procure all the information using his own credentials – instead, he asked others to give out their logins and passwords. Sounds pretty unbelievable, given the secure nature of NSA’s work, but there you have it. Snowden worked as a computer systems administrator at the Hawaii facility and apparently people are willing to give up their passwords to admins if asked nicely – a total of 20 to 25 NSA employees reportedly has done so.

The best part is, even the NSA doesn’t know and most likely will not know the extent of the leaks until Snowden is finished with publishing them. He has been releasing information on NSA’s programs gradually throughout the year, starting this summer, and recently has announced that he’s saving essentially “the best for last”, and there’s much more to come. So, why doesn’t the US government know what kind of information he got away with? The Hawaii facility, from which he copied the files, simply doesn’t have software which tracks activity of its users in the local network – and you’d think that a supposedly highly secure agency dealing with confidential data would keep tighter control over things like that.

Anyway, so what’s going on with Edward Snowden these days? Well, he first started his life as a leaker in Hong Kong. Actually, he initially wanted to go to Iceland and receive and asylum status there – but he was afraid the American government would not let him do that. Then he decided to go to Ecuador through Russia and Cuba – but after he landed in Moscow, the US government annulled his passport, rendering his travel plans useless. After being grounded in Moscow he was essentially stuck in legal limbo, unable to leave as no country would give him asylum status in absentia – or, you know, allegedly some countries were pressured by the U.S. to give Snowden the cold shoulder.

And that’s the story of how Snowden finally settled in Russia – after being stuck in the transit zone of one of Moscow’s airports – again, allegedly, as no one could actually find him anywhere in the public areas – he filed for temporary asylum – and Russian migration services satisfied his request. He’s been here for about half a year now – and according to an interview which was aired on Sunday on the Brazilian channel Globo, he’s happy that he was granted asylum here. Well, frankly, it’s not like he had a choice at the time. In any case, apparently he’s not wasting time here – apart from sending various media outlets more leaks from time to time, he’s studying Russian – and according to his statement, he now knows it well enough to “wish a Merry Christmas” in Russian.

Obama, U.S. media lied about Syrian nerve gas

By David Sole

December 17, 2013

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour M. Hersh has written a detailed and devastating exposure of the U.S. government’s manipulation of military intelligence to create a pretext for the war it very nearly unleashed against Syria last September.

Hersh’s main conclusion is that President Barack Obama and many in his administration “omitted important intelligence … presented assumptions as facts … [and] failed to acknowledge something known to the U.S. intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the … war with access to sarin.”

Hersh gained worldwide fame for exposing the My Lai massacre and cover-up in Vietnam in 1969. His 2004 articles detailed the systematic torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq directed by the U.S. military, the CIA and private contractors.

This latest article, published in the London Review of Books on Dec. 8, utilizes current and former intelligence sources to whom Hersh has a long history of access. Classified documents going back months before the Aug. 21 sarin attack outside Damascus, Syria, show that the U.S. government concluded that the al-Nusra Front, a major force in the Syrian rebel movement, had “mastered the mechanics of creating sarin … in quantity.” Yet in his Sept. 10 televised speech, President Obama insisted that the Syrian government was responsible and that only they had sarin capabilities.

Some high-level intelligence officers went to Hersh about this misuse of intelligence. One compared it to the fraudulent Gulf of Tonkin incident that was used to justify widespread bombing of north Vietnam in 1964. “Obama … and his cronies in the White House make up the intelligence as they go along,” stated one officer.

By selective reporting, some major U.S. media also collaborated with the Obama game plan of deception. Nine days after the Aug. 21 incident, the administration delivered a document making the case for Syrian government culpability to a handpicked group of journalists. The Washington Post gave front-page coverage to how the U.S. traced every step of the attack, linking it to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

When the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was forced to issue a correction days later, the Washington Post chose not to reveal this to its readers.

Similarly, the New York Times made use of a Sept. 16 United Nations report to claim that the munitions, the flight path and the length of the rocket flight conclusively implicated the Syrian army as the source of the sarin attack. The report itself, however, warned that the rebel controlled area allowed the evidence to be “possibly manipulated.”

When Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor of science, technology and international security Theodore Postol and missile technology expert Richard M. Lloyd later concluded that calculations of the flight path and range could not be as earlier reported, the New York Times failed to report this.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syrian opposition: secret accord

The British Times published an article in January 2012 that said Saudi Arabia and Qatar joined in a covert deal to fund weapons acquisitions by the Syrian opposition to topple the regime of Bashar Assad. A secret accord between the governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the Syrian opposition was reached after the Arab League of Nations foreign ministers Cairo meeting in January 2012. A representative of the Syria opposition told the British newspaper that Saudi Arabia offered any assistance. He added Turkey also took an active part in supporting the opposition by delivering arms across the Syria-Turkey border.

Mehmet Ali Ediboglu, a deputy from the province of Hatay, said to a United Arab Emirates outlet the National there were great quantities of Turkey-made fire arms in Syria. Ediboglu was part of the Turkish Republican People's Party team coming to Syria in September 2011. The Syrian officials showed the delegation truckloads of weapons unloaded in deserted buffer zone between Syrian and Turkish checkpoints. According to the Turkish deputy’s interview the weapons were delivered by the Muslim Brothers.

Pro-Israeli Debka internet-outlet close to the Israeli Intelligence Mossad reported as far back as August 2011 that NATO delivered shoulder-fired air defense systems, anti-tank weapons, grenade launchers and heavy machine guns to the opposition forces across the territory of Turkey. “Syrian rebels have been receiving training inside Turkey” Debka reported. NATO and the USA organized a campaign to recruit thousands of Muslim volunteers from different countries to boost the might of Syrian “rebels”. The Turkish army provided them with training and safe passage across the Turkey-Syrian border.

Syria now views Saudi Arabia as its number one enemy and accuses it of trying to destroy the country by arming jihadists and other rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

Peace Talks Syria: German weapons business

It is unclear what, exactly, impresses the Arabs most about the new "Leopard 2" battle tank. Is it its reliable 120-millimeter smoothbore cannon, which remains stubbornly fixed on its target, even when the 68-ton behemoth is traveling at high speeds through the desert? Is it the "increased power-rated additional power generators for check-point missions" touted by the Munich-based manufacturer, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann? Or the "communication interface on the exterior of the vehicle for dismounted forces?"

In the first week of July 2012, Krauss-Maffei shipped one of its new miracle weapons to the Saudi desert to test the Leopard 2 under extreme heat conditions. The Defense Ministry in Berlin sent along an officer with the German Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr, to ensure safety during test firing of the tank's guns.

The successful desert test didn't go unnoticed by the region's sheikhs. The government of Qatar has already shown interest in buying up to 200 tanks, a deal that, should it come to fruition, could be worth up to €2 billion ($2.6 billion).

The Saudis, for their part, have already become loyal customers. The German government responded positively to their request to buy up to 270 of the Leopard 2 tanks. In a new request, the sheikhs have petitioned the German government for its approval of the purchase of a few hundred "Boxer" armed transport vehicles.

German high-tech weapons are a hot commodity among Arab potentates and other autocrats. They haven't failed to notice that the coalition government of Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) has steadily relaxed Germany's otherwise restrictive arms export policy.

On December 6, 2012, Germany's cabinet authorized the stationing of German Patriot air defense missiles on the Turkish border with Syria as part of a NATO mission 'to help protect Turkey from possible cross-border attacks'. The mission involved up to 400 troops from the German military, the Bundeswehr, and also included personnel for AWACS surveillance aircraft and commando units. The mandate had a one year limit with the possibility of extension.
