Chemical weapons: New Zealand

Geneva Protocol on gas warfare was signed in 1925. Whether such stocks were actually acquired is still not clear. New Zealand actively supported retention of the 'right' of chemical retaliation when the question of banning CW entirely was raised at the 1932 Disarmament Conference.

During World War 2 New Zealand was involved in research, development and production of CW weaponry.

New Zealand acquired a considerable quantity of chemical weapons. One stockpile may have accompanied the 3rd Division to the Pacific. The other main stockpile was stored at Belmont between 1942 and 1946, and included 12 770 rounds of 25 pounder mustard shell, 15 300 gas bombs for 4.2 inch mortar.
The ultimate fate of this CW arsenal is not clear. Some may have been transferred to US forces in the Pacific.

In 1946 some 1500 tons of 25 pounder shells and 20 tons of mortar bombs were dumped off Cape Palliser. This would be equal to about 135,000 shells and 2200 gas bombs. A further 200 tons were dumped in Hauraki Gulf. Other gas munitions may have been dumped as late as 1957. RNZN ships apparently continue to carry tear gas munitions for riot control operations ‘in aid of the civil power’. New Zealand possibly provided defoliants for the Vietnam war.

Congo Free State

After trying unsuccessfully to make a move into the Philippines, Leopold set his sights on controlling the Congo. He came in with promises of helping the native inhabitants, and became the sole owner of the Congo Free State. His secret goal: to quietly pillage the natural resources, including the inhabitants. After finding the returns a disappointment in the collection of ivory, Leopold made a killing by hiring a private army assigned to force locals to collect sap from rubber plants at a time when that business was booming. Leopold essentially enslaved the locals and kept quiet the atrocities that became part and parcel of his rule. When villagers did not meet quotas, his forces cut off their hands. His regime was responsible for the deaths of millions of Congolese.

Latest News Syria: Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA)

The systems of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) have been disrupted by a cyberattack of unknown origin.

September 13th, 2013

Over the past days, Anonymous hackers have announced launching attacks against the news organization’s website. However, it’s uncertain if the current outage is caused by them.

A few hours ago, the Syrian Computer Society revealed that “cyber terrorist attacks” caused some Syrian servers to go down.

At the time of writing, the domains of SANA are inaccessible.

SANA is a state-owned company operated by the country’s Ministry of Information. Ever since the alleged chemical weapons attack, the organization’s systems have often been targeted by hackers.

This latest attack comes shortly after SANA published a full transcript of an interview that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had with Russian state TV Rossiya-24.

In the interview, Assad revealed that Syria decided to place its chemical weapons under international control because of Russia’s proposal, and not because of the US threats.
