An official source at Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said in a statement to SANA that Syria strongly condemns the two terrorist blasts rocking the Volgograd city, southern Russia, yesterday and today.

War on Syria: Media Resistance - Unifying efforts against terrorism

Forum of Media of Resistance in Face of War on Syria calls for unifying efforts against terrorism

Damascus, Dec 29, 2013 (SANA) - Forum of Media of Resistance in the Face of War on Syria called for unifying efforts in the face of the takfiri and international terrorism against the Resistance's forces in the Middle East region.

In its communique on Sunday, the forum also called for establishing a unified media front in the face of terrorism.

The communique said that the Zionist scheme, which is the main threat to the Arab and Islamic nations, lacks strength factors to sustain or expand without the cowardice of some governments.

The participants of the forum said that the Zionist project has hidden allies among the Arab and Islamic nations, adding that the takfiri terrorist project is the same as the Zionist one.

They considered that the current war, which is waged against all humanity and aims at distorting the true image of Islam, targets the strength elements of the Arab nation, particularly in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

They called for condemning all sorts of organized terrorism perpetrated by the armed terrorist groups against civilians all across the Arab and Islamic region.

They noted that the telecommunication revolution has changed the views to wars and is now able to convert victories to defeats and vice versa through marketing and handling facts and ideas.

On the international conference on Syria "Geneva 2", the communique considered the conference as a result of the steadfastness of the Syrian people, army and leadership, adding that the conference is an appropriate opportunity to convey the reality of the victories of the Syrian army and to reveal the fakeness of the illusionary victories alleged to be achieved by the terrorist groups.

Join Noam Chomsky: become a donor to Jewish Voice for Peace

Dear Sir,

One of JVP's strengths is our incredible Advisory Board - which includes activists, artists, and writers like Naomi Klein, Tony Kushner, and Michael Ratner. Legendary author and activist Noam Chomsky is also a founding member of our Advisory Board -  and he wrote this note to explain why he thinks so highly of JVP, and to ask you to join him by making a tax-deductible year-end donation. Right now, it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a group of our most committed donors.

I was raised in Philadelphia in a world of Jewish immigrants, immersed in Hebrew culture—and through my extended family—introduced to radical working class politics.

In the 1940s, I supported equal rights for Jews and Arabs, a view that today would be considered practically treasonous. Then again, a lot of my views on war, empire, capitalism and so forth have been viewed as treasonous. At least they were at first.

These days, there are really only a handful of Jewish organizations that honor the traditions of universal equality that inspired me to be an activist so many years ago.

Jewish Voice for Peace is one of them, and I hope you'll join me and become a JVP donor with a $36 tax-deductible contribution - especially now when every dollar you give through midnight, December 31 will be matched.

I know first-hand how rough it can be to speak out about the terrible consequences of unconditional U.S. support for Israeli policies.

Policies that violate international law, and the human rights of Palestinians and also Israelis, like the Bedouin.

The truth is, none of us can do this work alone. To shift the balance of power, we have to build a grassroots movement that can challenge the status quo.

And this is why I support Jewish Voice for Peace—because they're doing just that.

JVP is fearless - they regularly go toe-to-toe with organizations with 10 and 50 times their budget.

They're principled - their commitment to international law and justice is unwavering.

They're smart - they have built a large grassroots base, are strategic in their campaigns, and know how to leverage limited resources to make big impacts.

Groups like Jewish Voice for Peace don't get big donations from foundations or billionaire donors. They exist because thousands of people just like you and me chip in what we can.

So please join me. Make a gift now. The impact will be doubled if you give before midnight, December 31st.

Becoming a JVP donor is something tangible you can do, today, to change the world.

Please click here to chip in a $36 or even $50 tax-deductible gift today.

Sincerely,

Noam Chomsky
JVP Advisory Board member

Pan Arab Unity will stop American colonialism

Union.between.Syria.and.Egypt.1958

Magnum Photo: SYRIA. Damascus. Union between Syria and Egypt. Portrait of President of Egypt Gamal Abdel NASSER. 1958.

Gamal Abdel Nasser led the 1952 Egyptian revolution that overthrew the corrupt and ineffective monarchy of King Farouk. Nasser was born into a working-class family in Asyut province. His father was a postal clerk. Nasser graduated from the Royal Military Academy in Cairo and served in the Sudan. He fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War at Falluja, where Egyptian forces held out against Israel until the war’s end. After the 1948 war, Nasser and other junior officers blamed King Farouk for the war’s substandard weaponry and lack of military strategy.

Nasser was one of the founders of the secret Free Officers group that was determined to oust Farouk and set Egypt on a different path. Although the older and better-known Brigadier-General Muhammad Naguib was put forward to the public as the head of the officers’ group, Nasser was in fact the acknowledged leader. He was known for carefully listening to all viewpoints and then making decisions. On July 22, 1952, the Free Officers overthrew the monarchy in a practically bloodless coup d’état. A Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) was established with Naguib as its head. Nasser and Naguib clashed over whether to keep a parliamentary system or to establish a one-party state with populist support, a course Nasser favored. The majority of the officers favored Nasser, and a single party, the Liberation Rally, was established in 1953. After a failed assassination attempt on Nasser in 1954, the Muslim Brotherhood, with whom Naguib had close ties, was banned, and Naguib was removed from power. A new constitution was implemented in 1956 and Nasser was elected president by a huge majority of Egyptian voters. He was twice reelected to the position. A highly charismatic figure and a brilliant speaker in colloquial Arabic, Nasser was extremely popular with the majority of Egyptians and among average Arabs everywhere.

Not an ideologue, Nasser was a pragmatic political leader who sought to develop Egypt economically and socially. He moved toward socialism and the Soviet Union after his requests for military aid had been rebuffed by the United States. His regime jailed members of both the Egyptian Communist Party and the Muslim Brotherhood on the right.

After attending the Bandung Conference in 1955, Nasser joined with Jawaharlal Nehru of India and Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia in championing positive neutralism, in which Third World nations would not forge solid alliances with either the United States or the Soviet Union in the cold war but would instead act in their own best interests. Neither of the superpowers liked this approach, but the United States was particularly hostile to it. Steering a neutral course, Nasser opposed the Western-led CENTO/Baghdad Pact and opposed Arab regimes such as the Hashemite monarchies in Iraq and Jordan and the conservative, extremely pro-Western Saudi Arabian monarchy.

Nasser also spoke of Egypt belonging to three circles: the Arab, African, and Islamic worlds. Under Nasser, Egypt became a center for African and Arab political leaders and students. Although he was personally a devout Muslim, Nasser was committed to secular government and persecuted Islamists, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood, which sought to establish a state based on Muslim religious law and practice.

Like all Arab leaders, Nasser supported the Palestinian cause and their right to self-determination. He permitted some fedayeen (self-sacrificers) guerrilla attacks from the Egyptian-administered Gaza Strip in Israel, but he also recognized the superiority of Israel’s military. Consequently he initially sought, through back channels, to negotiate settlements to the conflict with Israel. Israel insisted on face-to-face negotiations, and the attempts all failed.

In 1956 after the United States had refused to grant aid for building the Aswān Dam, Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal. The nationalization led to the 1956 Arab-Israeli War, in which Great Britain, France, and Israel jointly attacked Egypt. The war was a military loss for Egypt but a political victory after which Nasser became indisputably the most popular man in the entire Arab world.

Conservative pro-Western monarchies: Jordan and Saudi Arabia

During the so-called Arab cold war Nasser’s influence dominated the liberal, progressive, and socialist governments in Syria and elsewhere, versus the conservative pro-Western monarchies, including Jordan and Saudi Arabia. In 1957, relations with King Saud from Saudi Arabia became antagonistic as the latter began to fear that Nasser’s increasing popularity in Saudi Arabia was a genuine threat to the royal family’s survival. Despite opposition from the governments of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Lebanon, Nasser maintained his prestige among their citizens and those of other Arab countries. With the formation of the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria in 1958, Nasser perhaps reached the peak of his popularity.

Following the devastating military losses in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Nasser accepted responsibility and resigned. Massive and generally spontaneous public demonstrations calling for his return led him to resume the Egyptian presidency, but he never regained the unquestioning support throughout the Arab world that he had previously enjoyed.

In 1970 Nasser was called upon to mediate a truce between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and King Hussein of Jordan in the bloody war between the two. Shortly thereafter he suffered a massive heart attack, in part brought on by the tensions of the negotiation, and died in late September. Although Nasser was mistrusted and opposed in most of the West and Israel, millions of mourning Egyptians joined his funeral cortege. The legacy of Nasserism, secular pan-Arab nationalism, and state-directed socialism, spread throughout most of the Arab world during Nasser’s lifetime, but declined and, except in Lebanon, largely diminished after his death.

Christmas Mass held in churches across Syria

Syria's Muslims and Christians share a single destiny

Dec 25, 2013 - Provinces, (SANA) – In deference to the current circumstances in Syria, Christmas celebrations were limited to holding mass and prayers in churches and places of worship across the country.

In St. George Cathedral in Damascus, Archbishops Jean Qawaq and Matthew al-Khuory, and Archbishop al-Khory recited a message from Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Ignatius Zakka I Iwas.

In his message, Patriarch Iwas reaffirmed that Syria is the eternal home of Syriacs, reiterating calls for resolving the crisis via dialogue and political solutions and stressing that Syria's Muslims and Christians share a single destiny.

He called upon the countries that will participate in the "Geneva 2" conference to cease their support for terrorists who are bound to turn against them one day.

Patriarch Iwas reiterated calls for releasing Bishops John Ibrahim and Paul Yazigi and the nuns of St. Thecla Convent who were abducted by terrorists.

He said that there are attempts by certain sides to expel Christians from the Middle East, asserting that there can be no Middle East without Christianity and no Christianity without the Middle East, adding "the See of Antioch will never in any day be located in Stockholm, Frankfurt or Los Angeles."

Patriarch Iwas concluded his message by offering season's greetings to President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian people and praying for Syria and its martyrs.

In the National Evangelical Church in Damascus, Pastor Peter Zaour headed the mass in which he prayed for the cessation of bloodshed and the restoration of stability and security to Syria.

Pastor Zaour called upon Syrians to stand fast in the face of the conspiracy targeting them and their land and to put their faith in God, parying for the abducted bishops and nuns and all other abductees.

He prayed to God to bless President Bashar al-Assad and grant him health, concluding by stressing that the conspiracy seeking to destroy Syria is doomed to fail.
